The first woman strode out of the Black Sea and out on to the shore, stopping to pour gold over her head. Dripping with salt water she looked upward and called to the King of the Sun. Fiery in reply an echo came. Upon remembering her journey, the first woman uttered the language of the bird and a Hawk flew down to converse with her; resting on a pitted rock. She talked of the darkness in her heart, the sorrow of losing her sons and how she came to have only one eye. She told the Hawk how she still mourned her first wife; what white hands she had, what flowing hair, such an eloquent tongue, such a fine mind. With that she picked up a small rock and broke it in two; causing a beetle to scurry from its hiding place. Continuing, she told of how she had been imparted with a gift by an old god. How she had been transformed in her grief into a salmon. Through icy rivers with shards of glass she had swum; such a harsh but exhilarating existence, filled with the sparkle of reflection and the wonder of the new day. All had been fine until a bird had swooped and taken her eye. The Hawk listened intently then remarked upon how old the woman looked; how ravaged by time she had become. How she had been before the time of the Black Flood. He loquaciously talked about how light the air was, how noble the streams were inland. He hopped about on the rock and lamented the ‘hundred’; that tall forest reduced to blackened stumps. The woman listened very impatiently, with her one good eye trained on the Hawk’s markings. At last she cried out how she recognised the Hawk as the evil attacker whom had plucked out her eye. Now she was owed; compensation due. The Hawk laughed, and said he’d eat the other eye if it was more than a mere morsal. The woman bemoaned how uncaring the Hawk was and vowed to prove how gentle she was. She sat down and told more tales; how she had once been a blue-eyed falcon, flying through the cosmos, caring for the milk laden skies. How she had fought beside the King in the great battles, where she had lost her sons. How she had nursed the wounded. Upon hearing this the Hawk cried; repenting all his ways of the past and saying how scared of death he was. The woman comforted him and told him she would stay with him until the end; he wasn’t alone. The next day, time caught up with them and they both succumbed to the long sleep; the night falling from its axis.
